Preparing the base

The base preparation is similar to paving.  The key is to take your time and prepare a hard, firm base. turf

Step1. Spray your existing lawn with a weed killer (Glyphosate). When the lawn is completely dead remove all the dead grass, roots and any organic matter. The ideal depth of the excavation should be between 50mm and 150mm depending on the volatility of the existing soil base. (Sandy well drained soil will require less excavation). NB: Always determine the correct levels to allow your lawn to drain.

Step 2. Mark out the lawn area. For a curved lawn area the easiest way is by using a garden hose. Lay the hose around the perimeter of your new lawn and mark it with a marking spray. For a straight edge lawn use a string line to get a neat edge. It is important to define the lawn area with a timber, brick or concrete edge as this will form a boarder for your turf and contain your imported base. If you need to secure the edges of your turf install a timber edge (to the finished height of your base) inside the border perimeter. Once the timber edge is installed it acts as a guide to your finished height when you're screading.

Step 3. Synthetic lawn needs a smooth compacted base to be installed on, similar to paving. Once the existing vegetation has been removed we recommend a very light watering and the plate compactor be used to settle the existing soil prior to bringing in the sub-base.

Step 4. The sub-base should be constructed by using crushed rock or similar eg. certified road base. For domestic areas allow between 50mm to 75mm of road base, spread evenly, water lightly and compact with a plate compactor. The depth of sub-base should be dependant on the type of soil. Free draining soils require less base material. The key to a professional quality finish is in the preparation of a level, hard base (you must be able to walk on the base with out leaving any foot prints). The synthetic grass carpet has limited drainage so it is important to install the base with adequate fall so any excess water can drain away.

Note.  If it is likely your turf will experience occasional vehicle traffic, allow a min 80mm to 150mm of certified road base.

Alternative base. Use minimum of 50mm crusher dust dry, mixed with cement, approx 4 bags per cubic metre.

Step 5. Once the crushed rock has been compacted import approx 20mm thick screed layer of crusher dust (5-7mm crushed rock) screed to the required level, compact and you're ready for laying.

Your final level should be the length of the grass below the finished height.
